The tables set, for each type of asset, a maximum annual percentage and a maximum number of years, and you choose the pace within that range. kontora calculates the depreciation schedule for each asset and books the expense for every fiscal year, so the deduction is neither missed nor taken beyond the limits.
In practice, you depreciate items that last more than a year and are used in the business: computers, furniture, vehicles assigned to the activity, machinery, or premises refurbishment. Depreciation starts when the item is put into use, not when it is paid for, and land is never depreciated, only the building on it.
The classic mistake is booking the whole laptop as an expense in the quarter it was bought. Another is continuing to depreciate an item that has been sold or is no longer used in the business, or applying the maximum pace one year and forgetting the next.
Depreciation shows up as an expense in the cuenta de pérdidas y ganancias and, accumulated, reduces the asset's value in the balance de situación. For an autónomo it goes into the capital goods record book and the income tax return; for an SL, into the Impuesto de Sociedades.
