Pluriactividad (being employed and self-employed at once)

Pluriactividad means being an employee and self-employed at the same time, contributing simultaneously to the general regime and to RETA (the self-employed scheme). You pay into the system twice, but if your combined contributions exceed the cap set each year by the contributions order, you are entitled to a partial refund of the excess.

The refund of the excess is nowadays processed automatically, without you having to claim it. Within RETA you still pick your bracket based only on your self-employment net income, regardless of your salaried job.

In practice, pluriactividad is common among people who start their own project without leaving their job. When you register with RETA you report that situation, and your quota is calculated like any other autónomo's, by income bracket. What changes is that your total contributions may exceed the annual cap, and that is where the refund comes in.

The typical mistake is thinking that, since you already contribute through your employer, you do not need to register as an autónomo. If your self-employed activity is habitual, registration is mandatory, and skipping it can lead to penalties and back contributions with surcharges. Another error is forgetting that your income tax return will add your salary and your business income together, and that the withholding on your payslip may fall short.

It is linked to RETA, the base de cotización, the regularización de cuotas and the self-employed quota. Your self-employed activity needs its own books, invoicing and quarterly forms, separate from your payslip, and kontora prepares them box by box with deadline reminders.
